Dear Guests and friends of Casa Mosaica,

It’s been a while since I have written I’m afraid and another very unusual year for us all. I hope you are safe and well.

Thankfully we were able to welcome some guests back this summer, mostly Europeans from May, then by August our British visitors were able to come. We managed to get to Gaucín twice; at the end of May, once we had had both vaccines, and at the end of July for a month and hoping to be back again for November. Both journeys were trouble free once we had got our heads around the paper work and where to get the correct tests for travel. I will be very happy to share this info with any guests who need it.

I was extremely lucky to have a British family, who had just moved to Spain, rent both properties together for 6 months over the winter. So Kevin & Geoffrey were not alone while we were stuck in the UK as well as another guest renting both houses for the whole of July. It seems like Casa Mosaica is starting to become a popular place for a “staycation”, the fibre internet works very well and it’s peaceful enough to sit down to write a book or work on zoom in the Casita office (left) or the Apartment living room (right). Contact me for winter “Staycation” ideas and I have some great special offers in the Apartment from 25th September here.

Azulete, the lovely restaurant with a terrace above the village square has new owners who have introduced a modern and original cuisine to add to dining options available in Gaucín. We had the pleasure of enjoying several delicious meals in their restaurant, beautifully presented, as you can see below.

We are very lucky to be able to find such good food in the village. Platero & Co received another Michelin “Bib Gourmand” which they have held every year since 2018. From 1955 The Michelin guide marked restaurants with a letter “R" indicating establishments the inspectors felt deserved recognition for serving good food at low prices. In 1977 this became know as the “Bib Gourmand”.

Another restaurant we have enjoyed going to since the early days is Restaurant Valdivia, just outside the village on the road to Cortes de la Frontera. Delicious high quality steaks and meat. I had the most heavenly fat tuna steak that I cooked to perfection on a brasier at the table exactly to my taste, it was absolutely delicious. The clientele are mostly local which we like and the terrace in the summer is lovely and all the staff all very friendly and welcoming.

As most of you know Gaucín has a large artist community (artgaucin.com). Despite the normal open studios exhibitions at the end of May being cancelled over the last 2 years there has been a regular exhibition at the new Gaucín town hall building. Paddy Robinson has been painting her wonderfully creative “Hat Paintings” for some years now. This year my son and his girlfriend commissioned Paddy to paint their portrait hat paintings….and this is how they came out. Queen Elizabeth 1 is one of her new ones. Contact Paddy here for more info: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

I get a regular email from Firmm a dolphin and whale watching organisation in the Straights of Gibraltar out of Tarifa (www.firmm.org). Their latest emails says that they sighted many Orcas in August. “On some trips we were lucky enough to see up to 18 Orcas. They are still there and our passengers have the opportunity to see them. But even when the Orcas disappear from the Strait of Gibraltar, there are still the beautiful Common Dolphins, the curious Bottlenose Dolphins and the Dolphins that follow the Orcas in size, the Pilot Whales. The chance of seeing Sperm Whales also increases towards autumn.” It’s a wonderful trip for visitors to the area.

September is the flowering season of the Bignonia trumpet vine (Podranea Ricasoliana) that grows up and over the tall garden wall and the plumbago will still be in flower in the garden. This is a very lush photo of the trumpet vine some some years ago, I wonder if it’s flowering as abundantly this year?

It turned out to be an unusually hot summer in Gaucín this year with temperatures going up to the high 30’s. Some of you may have seen that there have been large fires up in the Sierra Bermeja over the last days. Gaucín was not in danger but 5 villages were evacuated and thankfully today (14/9/21) after rain in the night and incredible work from the firefighters, they have now been able to return to the villages and the fire is under control…..The rain dances worked!!

We love the cool months almost more. From November to April, when it’s possible to get out walking more easily to the top of El Hacho, our mountain or hiring an electric bike nearby and cycling the magnificent road to Ronda. The village has a wonderful gym, tennis court and paddle court all within easy walking distance from CM and the town hall have now provided details on the Wikiloc app of 12 wonderful walks within the Municipality that are easy to follow using the App. I can also help you book guided walks if you prefer.

Do contact me for more information on a winter staycation at Casa Mosaica, I’d be only too happy to help. And, again, thank you very much to guests who write generous reviews, they are very much appreciated.

Meanwhile I send you very best wishes from the CM team and most especially from these 2 handsome fellows. - Emma
